Great post Bill.

Your observation regarding their 'kinder, gentler' approach is key.

I weighed in on a similar theme recently; here was my take on leading with 'young eyes' http://goo.gl/ftHTp

The leaders I was learning from and speaking with were excited about possibilities but wary of smoke-and-mirrors vision hyperbole. They have heard too many shouts of “Let’s take the next hill!” from leaders whose organizations later crumbled under the weight of hubris, greed, self-promotion and sheer ignorance of reality. They seek lofty goals but feel very inadequate to reach them without effort, community, wisdom and the help of mentors. [...]

They key thing to me is to remember that it is good for me to follow God. God is a rewarder. It is always in my best interest to live according to God's kingdom.

Attitude is equally important to skill in the workplace, you can't really hire someone who only has one or the other. Not all skills can be trained for, or it is simply too time consuming and not cost effective, however, I know attitude goes a long way in success- being open and willing to learn, to help, and most of all, blending in with the rest of the staff, because overall, it's always a team effort.

Great insight, indeed!

These findings seem to affirm the old axiom, "Hire for attitude; train for skill". That may be an over-simplification, but the principle appears sound.

Great insight and reminder Bill.

Bill I resonate strongly with several of these, but particularly with the idea of talking philosophy, not just strategy. In any change process I've been a part of it's been important every once in a while to climb back up to 30,000 feet and to remind peopl WHY we're doing this, not simply WHAT we're doing.
